Solomon Islands World War II Memorial Association Elects Office Bearers
The Solomon Islands World War II Memorial Association held its inaugural general meeting on Tuesday 30th September, during which it elected its first office bearers.
The Association brings together owners and representatives of World War II memorial sites, museums, battlefields, and other related heritage locations throughout the Solomon Islands.
The Solomon Islands were at the center of one of the most decisive campaigns in the Pacific War. Sites such as Bloody Ridge, Henderson Field, and Iron Bottom Sound connect our country to a global story of sacrifice and resilience. Tens of thousands fought and died here. Preserving these places ensures their stories and sacrifices are not forgotten. Battlefield sites and war memorials also teach younger generations about the cost of war, the importance of peace, and the role Solomon Islanders played in shaping world history. Additionally, our WWII heritage sites and stories attract visitors from around the world, supporting local communities through cultural and historical tourism.
The primary mission of the Solomon Islands WWII Memorial Association is to preserve, maintain, and promote awareness of World War II memorials and battle sites within the Solomon Islands. Through educational outreach and close collaboration with local communities, the Association aims to safeguard and transmit the historical and cultural memories of this significant period to future generations.
The Association was established with the support of Tourism Solomons and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The elected office bearers are:
- Chairman: Mato Mui
- Vice Chairperson: Casper Diau
- Secretary: Virginia Maere
- Treasurer: Benwell Sukulu
- Members: Willie Besi and Paul Tuqa
The Association welcomes new members to join. Enquiries about membership should be directed to the Secretary of the Association or to the Tourism Division, Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
