“Pride of Our Nation” – 13th Anniversary Commemorates Solomon Islanders’ WWII Sacrifice
BY DESMOND RAHE
With solemn reflection and national pride, the 13th Anniversary of the Pride of Our Nation commemoration was held today on Commonwealth Street, Point Cruz, marking the bravery and sacrifice of Solomon Islanders who served during the historic Battle of Guadalcanal in World War II.
The event also marked the 83rd anniversary of the U.S. Marine landing on Guadalcanal—one of the most significant turning points in the Pacific War. The Pride of Our Nation commemoration continues to be a significant annual event in Solomon Islands, keeping the memories of wartime heroes alive for future generations.

Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele led the ceremony, joined by Acting Governor-General Hon. His Excellency Patterson J. Oti, Honiara City Mayor Councillor Eddie Siapu, and a host of local and international dignitaries. Representatives from the U.S., Japan, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and other wartime allies were also in attendance.

Prime Minister Hon. Jeremiah Manele honored the role Solomon Islanders played during the war.
The ceremony began with an opening prayer, followed by the national anthem, stirring speeches, and a special presentation of medallions by Australian Defence Attaché Captain R.A.N. Emma Griffiths.

Members of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force band led a respectful march with the RISPF Platoon and Solomon Island Scouts. Community members watched quietly, some with tears, as wreaths were laid by dignitaries and a moment of silence was observed in honor of those who lost their lives.
The ceremony ended on a reflective note, reminding all present of the cost of freedom and the strength found in unity during the darkest of times.
