Tinakula Festival Theme “Roots to Horizon”: Celebrating Temotu’s Legacy
BY JOY OFASIA
Dennis Marita, Director at the Ministry of Culture and Tourism said the theme for this year’s Tinakula Festival, “Roots to Horizon,” celebrating Temotu’s legacy is both powerful and profound, reflecting the true essence of who we are as a people.
The Director congratulates the people of Temotu for their firm commitment and passion in organising this important cultural event for the past two or three consecutive years.
The Director revealed this in his keynote address speech during the official opening of the Tinakula Festival 2025 today.
He said the theme reminds the people of their roots, stories, customs, dances, languages, and wisdom, which anchors the people.

“It speaks to the horizon, our collective hopes, our dreams, and the journey we take forward as a people, a province, and a nation. In a fast-changing world dominated by technology, media, and global influences, our culture is a compass,” he said.
Marita said one of the strengths of Solomon Islanders lies in our cultural diversity, and in this regard, Temotu stands as a shining example, from Tikopia to Anuta, Duff Islands to Reef Islands, and Utupua to Vanikoro, where each community adds a distinct and invaluable thread to this beautiful makeup and foundation of this province.

The director also encouraged young people of Temotu as the custodians of tomorrow.
“To the young people of Temotu, you are the custodians of tomorrow. While the modern world may pull you in many directions, never let go of your identity.”

“Your culture is not a burden; it is a gift. Learn it, live it, share it, and let us move from roots to horizon, firmly grounded in who we are and boldly stepping into our shared future, and let the rhythm of your ancestors continue to lead through you,” he said.
