For Solomon Islands artist Loretta Taika, art is more than creativity. It is a way of telling stories about culture, identity and where people come from.

Loretta, who has roots in Rennell and Bellona Province and Malaita Province, has spent many years expressing herself through visual art, design and different forms of creative work. Today, she focuses mainly on fabric design and patterns, using them to share the beauty of Solomon Islands culture.

In an interview with SOLOMON WOMEN, Loretta said her passion for fashion design grew stronger when she was given an opportunity to showcase her work through Solomon Host. The platform allowed her to present her designs and patterns alongside former Miss Solomon Islands Elsie Polosovai.

“I extend my gratitude to Solomon Host for creating a space where my designs and patterns could be highlighted,” Loretta said. “Working with Elsie Polosovai was really where my interest in designing patterns truly sparked.”

Loretta explained that culture plays a big role in her work. Coming from two provinces has inspired her to combine different cultural elements in her designs.

“Culture, where I’m from, is the two provinces and where I come from is Solomon Islands,” she said. “Putting together diverse artwork of where you are from is very unique. You can identify where someone comes from just by looking at the designs and patterns from their country.”

Her passion for culture and design led her to create her own brand called Hahine Tasi. The brand name is very special to her because it was inspired by her granddaughter.

“The value that carries the Hahine Tasi brand is for the future,” Loretta explained. “Hahine Tasi means ‘a unique girl’, something that is valuable or something that carries value.”

She hopes that when women wear her designs, they will feel proud and confident.

“When they wear the brand they will feel that they have the value of being a Hahine Tasi,” she said.

Loretta believes that designs and patterns can do more than decorate clothing. For her, they tell stories about identity, heritage and unity among Solomon Islanders.

“Working on the designs gives me unity, harmony and a perspective of beauty,” she said. “I value designs from other provinces because they look good, they are unique and they tell a story as Solomon Islanders.”

According to Loretta, every design carries meaning and represents something important.

“All the designs have stories,” she said. “When you get to know them, you will learn how valuable they are.”

She also recognizes that many Solomon Islanders today come from mixed provincial backgrounds. Because of this, she hopes to design fabrics that reflect more than one cultural identity.

“Nowadays many people are from two or three provinces,” she said. “I want to design a piece where one fabric can show which provinces you are from by looking at the designs.”

Loretta believes culture can be preserved through art and fashion.

“You can preserve your culture through designs in just one fabric,” she said. “The designs can be anything that makes you feel connected to your culture.”

Her love for culture started during her childhood. Loretta said she spent much of her early life living with her grandparents, where she learned many traditional values.

“I used to attend meetings with them and I saw my grandfather doing carvings,” she recalled. “When I became an artist, I naturally blended in with the knowledge I already had.”

Looking ahead, Loretta hopes to take the Hahine Tasi brand beyond Solomon Islands. Her dream is to see her designs showcased overseas in countries such as Australia, New Zealand and even London.

“I want Hahine Tasi to be identified and remembered as a Solomon Islands brand,” she said.

Loretta also expressed her appreciation to former Miss Solomon Islands Elsie Polosovai, whom she credits as a strong supporter of her work.

“Elsie has been a motivation to me,” she said.

Through her designs, Loretta hopes to leave a lasting legacy — one where future generations will remember the story behind the Hahine Tasi brand and the culture it proudly represents.
