Tahamoana Lodge in Rennell Island Seeks Stronger Tourism Support

After two years of operation, Tahamoana Lodge on Lake Tegano in Rennell Island, Rennell and Bellona Province is slowly growing and hopes to attract more visitors, create jobs and bring more income to the local community.
The lodge was started by a retired teacher Job Tipaika and his wife, who saw the tourism potential of the area many years ago. However, financial problems delayed their plans.
The couple eventually took a joint loan to buy building materials, pay for freight and truck hire, and cover labour costs.
“We saw the potential of this place years ago, but we did not have the money to start,” the owner, Job Tipaika said.
Located on Lake Tegano, one of the largest lakes in the South Pacific and part of a UNESCO World Heritage area, the lodge gives visitors a chance to experience nature, local culture and the environment.
The owner said the lake’s beauty and unique bird species make it an important place for tourists and researchers.
Tahamoana Lodge also supports nearby families by buying fresh food from local residents to prepare meals for guests.
“Tourists want to experience our traditional lifestyle and customs. Local tourism businesses can help keep money in the community,” he said.
However, the lodge still faces challenges, including limited marketing, a lack of hospitality and management training, and limited funding to improve accommodation and add more activities.
The owner is calling for stronger cooperation between tourism operators, provincial and national governments, and other stakeholders.
“We need better support and stronger links so small businesses like ours can grow,” he said.
The lodge’s long-term goal is to improve infrastructure and tourism activities, attract more local and international visitors, and create lasting jobs and income for the family and wider community.
