COMMUNICATION plays a vital role in the growth and sustainability of tourism.
Marketing of tourists destinations helps travelers make informed decisions about where to go, and happens through several forms of communication, which include print, social media sites, and television.

In the context of Solomon Islands, the geographical setting has created a setback for communication companies to reach out to remote and isolated places, hence, the basic and traditional way of communicating is somehow still in use.

Better telecommunication service is, of course, one of the major driving force which attracts tourists and visitors into the country.

This is one major setback affecting rural tourism in the country.

Chris Neo, a native Isabel man who is also a tourism operator said fast and reliable telecommunication service is vital for rural tourism.

He said while most of the desired destinations and attractive sites were in the outskirts of urban centers or the rural areas, such service is of great demand.

“Not all tourists and visitors interested in urban centers.

“There are attractive sites and beautiful places to visit outside of town or in remote places.
“So by providing communication services especially the internet for these remote and rural destinations will enable visitors and tourists to communicate with their relatives and loved ones back home,” Neo said.

He continues that good internet service is one way of attraction for tourists.

Neo also said that better telecommunication and internet service in rural tourism will be helpful for operators in their marketing and promotion of destinations.

He further said only if the rural tourism operators have access to reliable communication and internet services, people’s standard of living will be improving as it creates job opportunities for the rural people as well as high cash flow due to an increase in tourists’ visitation.

Meanwhile, Neo called on the government and the ministry responsible to consider this call and address it for the development of the tourism sector in the country.
