THE Lavukal House of Chiefs in Russell Islands, Central Islands Province on Saturday, October 19th hosted the enthronement of newly appointed Chiefs at Louna Village, a significant cultural event for the communities of both East and West Russell.

The Lavukal people united in traditional feasting and entertainment to commemorate their heritage and shared future based on the theme of this year’s event, “Empowering and Enhancing Our Lavukal People,” highlighted the importance of traditional leadership in preserving the strength and unity of the Lavukal people.

Chiefs’ Day 2024 saw the induction of eight new chiefs into the Lavukal Council of Chiefs, representing the four main tribes: Solovui Tribe, Sevev Tribe, Kaiseleng Tribe, and Keruval Tribe. This event not only serves as a formal ceremony for the enthronement and dethronement of chiefs but also reinforces the resilience of Lavukal tradition and leadership.

In an interview with TOURISM, Hon. Oliver SaLopuka emphasized the significance of the ceremony, noting that it ensures the continuity of leadership within the Lavukal community. “This is about any chief who retires due to old age, passing on their authority to a successor,” SaLopuka explained, underscoring the importance of passing on wisdom and responsibilities to the next generation.

This year’s celebration also marked the culmination of efforts to empower Lavukal traditions, with key local entities like the Lavukal House of Chiefs, the Lavukal Indigenous Trust Board, and the Lavukal Investment Company playing vital roles in safeguarding the community’s indigenous rights. SaLopuka has been focused on strengthening these ties, ensuring that Lavukal customs remain resilient amid modern challenges.

The eight newly inducted chiefs include Mark Apa, Chief of the Olukita clan; Gregory Riahi, Chief of the Salitavea clan; Ismael Larry, Village Chief of Loside; Robert Vuka, Chief of the Mohu clan; John Waika, also Chief of the Mohu clan; Riccy Apa, Chief of the Ovulita clan; and Venasio Sakotoga, Chief of Avio. Their oath of allegiance was administered by Susan Kabau from the A.S. Willy Law Office, following a Mass that blessed the newly appointed chiefs.

The ceremony symbolized the transition of authority to younger leaders, to preserve Lavukal governance and cultural values for future generations. Chiefs’ Day 2024 was not only a celebration of the past but also a forward-looking event, affirming the community’s commitment to unity, cultural preservation, and progress.
