Tourism at the grassroots was given a major boost when around 40 women attended a workshop in Honiara from 3-5 October 2018.

The objective of the three-day tourism workshop was to train participants on how to manage tourism destinations and products, and do book keeping and financial management.

Solomon Islands Women in Business Association (SIWIBA) member Nerolyn Silas said the workshop had broadened her understanding of the importance of tourism, tourism products, pricing and marketing.

“The training was very useful for me as a grassroots woman especially if I want to operate a small tourism business in the future,” she said.

The event was organized by the Sol Grassroots Tourism Consultancy and facilitated by Calvin Charles and Laurie Leketo.

Charles said the objective was to provide training for newly established operators at the grassroots level.

“I strongly believe that without good knowledge about the tourism concepts on destination, products and services, nothing will materialise into monetary value or budget,” he said.

SIWIBA president Pamela Zoleveke encouraged the participants to practice what they acquired from the training.

“The training will give you more insights and knowledge on how to plan or even set up and manage a small tourism business in the future,” she said.

“You can also help others to rise to their own potential. The experiences and knowledge learnt from the workshop should act as a platform to inspire, develop and empower more women with their businesses and encourage more women to come and join SIWIBA and participate more in such trainings in the future.”

The participants were awarded certificates of achievement after the workshop.

SIWIBA’s main mission is to inspire women to realize their full potential, importance and status, and be increasingly recognized and heard in Solomon Islands’ society and to promote, develop and empower women’s participation as business owners in the private sector.
