TOURISM Division of the Ministry of Culture (MCT) and Tourism conducted a two-day bookkeeping training for 14 tourism accommodation businesses in and around Honiara at the Tourism Division’s conference room, Honiara. The training was held on Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd September 2021.

Moses Tepai, the Deputy Secretary of MCT said that bookkeeping training is very important to the local small and medium tourism businesses.

He said that to have a good knowledge and to practice sound financial bookkeeping by our local tourism business is an assurance for business success.

This is very important when the tourism industry is hard-hit by the current economic crisis. And those who are financially prepared can be able to survive and remain in operation.

“But the valuable knowledge you have gained during the training is needed to be put into use in running your businesses,” he added.

He further highlighted that now MCT is a development loan program with the Development Program of Solomon Islands (DBSI). The Ministry values such bookkeeping training as one of the requirements to enable the tourism businesses to qualify for the tourism development loan with DBSI.

And during the opening of the training, a DBSI representative clarified the tourism loan program process to be accessed by the tourism businesses.

Spoken on behalf of the local tourism operator participants, Sarah Riniu of the Parangiju Inland Mountain Lodge said all the participants had learned a lot about how to properly manage their business’s finances.

“It’s an area we have been struggling on, to improve our businesses,” she added.

She said the bookkeeping training is among the needed supports the tourism businesses need from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and other stakeholders.

And she thanked the Tourism Division for the training.

A certificate of completion presentations session is held at the end of the final day of the training.
