Western Province Revives Sustainable Tourism
BY CHRIS ALEX
THE Western Province Tourism Association (WPTA) has reconvened for the first time since 2019, marking the beginning of a new chapter for tourism in the Solomon Islands.
Under the leadership of newly elected President Pana Paza, the WPTA is committed to promoting sustainable tourism, cultural preservation, and economic growth throughout the region.
In an exclusive interview, President Paza emphasized the WPTA’s mission to facilitate collaboration between the tourism industry, government bodies, and local communities.
“Our primary goal is to promote tourism that respects our local culture and environment while providing valuable insights to guide government policies,” Paza told TOURISM MEDIA.
The WPTA aims to develop tourism in a way that is orderly and aligned with the Western Province’s values, ensuring that economic benefits go hand-in-hand with the preservation of the region’s cultural and environmental heritage.
One of the WPTA’s new initiatives is the creation of a Tourist Information Centre, which will support both tourists and local operators. Currently, the association includes 30 tourism operators representing diverse markets and experiences. This renewed focus on sustainable tourism is central to WPTA’s strategy, ensuring the long-term success of the tourism industry while safeguarding the region’s natural beauty and cultural traditions.
Tourism plays a vital role in the Solomon Islands’ economy by creating jobs, generating revenue, and fostering cultural exchange. With the newly elected committee—including Vice-President Hellen Tau, Treasurer Jenno Hughes, and Secretary Jordie Maike—WPTA is set to drive forward a vision of responsible tourism that honors the rich heritage of the Western Province, benefiting locals and visitors alike.
