THE Honiara Bands Association [HBA] is pleased to announce the birth of its annual flagship event “IUMI FEST” music concert featuring Honiara’s active live bands, starting in December 2022.The recently registered Honiara Bands Association [HBA] said in a statement the aim is to grow the Iumi Fest to become a national music festival, and eventually a regional/international music fest where big bands and artists will be invited to participate.

“HBA is proud to announce the IUMI FEST2022. The inaugural IUMI FEST is scheduled for 10th December 2022, and starting next year HBA is committed to make IUMI FEST2023 much bigger since it will coincide with the PG2023.

“To make it special, HBA will definitely bring big names next year. Although not all our live bands will participate in the official PG2023 events, HBA will provide sideline opportunities for all our bands and artists to showcase their musical talents during this regional event.

“We will set up open-air concert sites in different locations in Honiara, including our flagship event IUMI FEST2023.

“Next year 2023 will be a very busy one for HBA and live bands that are members of HBA’, the HBA Secretary Joey Maeohu said in the statement.Maeohu said once finalized, his committee will announce the venue but the date and timing have been confirmed.

“The inaugural Iumi Fest2022’s venue is yet to be confirmed but it will be on Saturday 10th December. We planned to start at 12pm so that families can be part of the music fest, and then leave before the music party begins at dusk till midnight.

“Some local big names will also be featured live on stage, this is to provide an opportunity for local fans to see them live on stage”, Maeohu added.Maeohu said more information and details will be provided for live bands and the public at large as soon as things are finalized.Meanwhile HBA Chairman Benjamin Afuga said the name “IUMI FEST” was chosen to reflect ownership of the music festival.“The word ‘Iumi’ in pidgin best describes “us, together and unity”. “Iumi simply means our festival. So, as HBA strives to unite and empower live bands and artists; it is only fitting it uses “Iumi.

“Fest is just a short form of festival. This is our festival to showcase our talents and potentials in music, share love through music and promote music with each other”, Afuga said.“The HBA vision is to create, provide and develop positively life-changing characters through live music and other musical related activities.“So, let me quote HBA’s mission: “HBA is a catalyst to ensure that every musician across Honiara have access and opportunity to participate in active live music performances.

“Furthermore, HBA will use its resources to provide national and international programs that recognize, promote and support music. HBA will also assist and support music by promoting awareness about music’s impact on humans, the society and accomplishments’, Afuga said. But to achieve these, it needs everyone’s support and cooperation Afuga admitted.

“We are here to make plans and announcements but to make things happen we need everyone’s support and cooperation. First it must come from musicians and bands. Without your uttermost support, cooperation and understanding, we cannot achieve anything.“Whilst flagging this important call, I would also like to call on the Government through its responsible Ministries and sponsors to support HBA’s plans. This is youth development and like you all know, music has power to change anything, and any situation.

“We believe that live music is a powerful entertainment and educational tool and core to everyone’s learning abilities and must be available to all gifted and talented musicians.

“Finally, live music must be accessible and open for potential musicians who are keen to undergo positively life-changing experiences including careers in music”, Afuga concluded in the HBA statement.
