The completion and handover of Santa Cruz (Lata) Airport marks a major milestone in improving connectivity, aviation safety and development opportunities for Temotu Province.

Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Communication and Aviation, Hon. Frederick Kologeto said the project represents more than an infrastructure upgrade.

He said it provides an important investment in connectivity, public safety, economic opportunity and access to essential services.

Speaking at the official handover ceremony in Lata, Kologeto said safe, reliable and efficient airport infrastructure was fundamental to connecting remote island communities with the rest of Solomon Islands.

Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Communication and Aviation, Hon. Frederick Kologeto.

Delivered under the Solomon Islands Road and Aviation Project 2 (SIRAP 2), the project comprises runway surfacing, installation of an Aeronautical Ground Lighting (AGL) System and construction of a new airport terminal building.

He said the sealed runway would provide a smooth, durable and weather-resistant surface, supporting safer aircraft operations and improving the reliability of air transport services.

Together with the lighting system, the improvements would also strengthen operational safety and support compliance with applicable Civil Aviation Regulations.

The Acting Prime Minister described Santa Cruz as the Eastern Gateway to Solomon Islands, highlighting its potential to promote regional cooperation, trade and economic development.

Hon. Kologeto said the airport upgrade would also provide an important foundation for advancing the Mota Lava Treaty between Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.

He said it would improve conditions for connectivity and economic cooperation between Temotu Province and Vanuatu’s Torba Province.

“Improved connectivity has the potential to facilitate cross-border trade, encourage the movement of people and goods, promote tourism and strengthen relationships between neighbouring island communities,” he said.

Hon. Kologeto acknowledged the World Bank, government agencies, Temotu Provincial Government, project teams and contractors for their contributions to the successful completion of the project.

He also called on government agencies, service providers and local communities to work together to protect and maintain public infrastructure for the benefit of future generations.
