SINU Business and Tourism Students Urged To Take University Studies Seriously
New and continuing students at the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) School of Business and Tourism (FBT) have been urged to take greater responsibility for their studies and prepare themselves to become professionals, leaders and responsible citizens.
The call was made by Acting Vice Chancellor and Pro Vice Chancellor Corporate, Dr William Parairato, during the school’s orientation programme held today at the Kukum Lecture Theatre.
Dr Parairato reminded students that university life is different from secondary school and requires greater independence, discipline, responsibility, critical thinking and commitment to learning.
“As you walk on the academic path, I encourage you to see your university education not simply as a means of obtaining a qualification, but as an opportunity to develop yourselves as professionals, leaders, entrepreneurs and responsible citizens of Solomon Islands,” he said.
He said the School of Business and Tourism has an important role to play in the country’s development, particularly through programmes in business, accounting, entrepreneurship, management, tourism and related disciplines.
“These areas contribute directly to economic development, employment creation and improved organizational performance,” Dr Parairato said.
He challenged students to look beyond simply passing examinations, saying Solomon Islands needs graduates who can identify problems, develop solutions, communicate effectively, work with others, demonstrate integrity and create opportunities for themselves and others.
“Solomon Islands needs graduates who can do more than pass examinations,” he said.
Dr Parairato encouraged students to make full use of the opportunities and resources available at SINU by attending classes regularly, reading widely, asking questions and actively participating in classroom discussions.
He also encouraged students to make use of the university library and other learning resources while developing good relationships with lecturers and fellow students.
“Above all, take responsibility for your own learning,” he said.
Dr Parairato also acknowledged the important role of academic staff in supporting and guiding students throughout their studies.
“Orientation is the beginning of a relationship between the faculty and its students. Let us ensure that our students feel welcomed, supported and challenged to achieve their full potential,” he said.
He further called on the school to strengthen its links with the business community, government and its agencies, the tourism industry, multilateral institutions and other stakeholders.
He said SINU programmes must continue to be reviewed and strengthened to ensure they remain relevant to the changing needs of Solomon Islands and the wider Pacific.
Dr Parairato also gave students three key messages to guide them throughout their university journey.
First, he urged them to take their studies seriously, noting that academic performance can open important opportunities.
Second, he encouraged students to develop strong character and professional values, stressing that employers are looking for people they can trust.
Finally, he challenged students to think beyond graduation and consider how the knowledge and skills they gain at SINU can contribute to the development of Solomon Islands.
Dr Parairato concluded by commending the School of Business and Tourism for organizing the orientation and thanked Dean Associate Professor Elliot Mugamu and his staff for hosting the event and inviting him to be part of the programme.
